DOCTOR WHO

On Friday it was announced by Titan Comics that the creative team for the new Eleventh Doctor’s comic would be myself and Al Ewing (Mighty Avengers, Loki) writing and Si Fraser (Nikolai Dante) on art. The 11th Doctor being Matt Smith to the layman. So, Geronimo it is. Fish fingers in custard. I wear a Fez now, Fez’s are cool etc.

I can’t say too much at this point. There’s more details to come. But this is something I’m pretty excited about. Watching Who has become something of an event in this house, and my son’s a big fan. Plus writing a character as iconic as The Doctor and the challenges that come from plotting storylines for the smartest man in the universe who absolutely won’t pull a gun or throw a punch to get himself out of bother? The freedom of telling a story in any setting in time and space with a genuinely good (two) hearted god of chaos at its centre. That all sounds fun to me.

And to do it with good people. Al and Si are both extremely talented friends who I’ve worked with before. Al and I, along with the equally annoying talented Si Spurrier, co-wrote the Judge Dredd: Trifecta crossover for 2000AD last year. Si Fraser and I did a story called Family together for the Judge Dredd Megazine some years ago. Mrs. Ewing and Fraser are both big fans of Who too, which helps.

Al and I have co-plotted the entire first year of the comic. Some issues will be co-written by us, some purely written by Al, some purely written by me, but the overriding series arc is the product of both of us, acting as sort of ‘siamese twin showrunners’. Two hearts, living in just one mind, as the great philosopher Phil Collins once wrote. Sort of. With Titan editor Andrew James skilfully leading us through the many Who continuity traps.

And we have all new companions (yes, plural) which means we get to create brand new characters with their own arcs for this series. That’s important, I think. If we do our job properly and make you care about these characters, then there’s stakes.

Anyway, more details when we can. But for now here’s Alice X Zhang’s extraordinary cover for #1, which will launch on July 23rd.
